Demography: The scientific study of human populations,
their characteristics, how these characteristics affect growth, and the
consequences of that growth is known as demography.
Population: A population is group of
individuals of the same species living in the same area or interbreeding and
sharing genetic information.
Species: A species is all individuals
that are capable of interbreeding and capable of producing fertile offspring. A
species is made up of populations.
Population Dynamics: The general study
of changes in population sizes and the causes of these changes.
Doubling Time: A concept used
frequently in discussing human population growth, is the time required for a population to double in size. A useful
role of thumb is that if you divide 70 by the annual percentage growth—that
will give approximately doubling time for anything growing exponentially. If
the growth rate of a human population of any country is 5% per year then its
population will double in every 14 years.
